Description

Revision:
Growth from 1999 (Hubble Image) to 2023 (Planewave image) illustrated in GIF in revision B.

Over the years I have loved studying, imaging and exploring the Cosmos that surrounds us.  It has filled me with awe and wonder and continues to do so today.  I realized the other day that I had never pointed my telescope at this 1st object catalogued by Charles Messier.

Title: M1 Growth- Hubble 1999 to Planewave 2023

Description: On March 16th of this year Detlef Hartman posted a remarkable time-lapse of M1. Images that he himself had taken for 14 years (2008-2022). I highly recommend you check out his post.

I thought I might try and compare my image to the Hubble legacy image of M1 taken back in 1999. While this GIF is not a time-lapse from year to year, it does show the difference in size over the 24 years span. Here are some details regarding the expansion rate and estimated growth during that time.

M1 lies 6500 distant and went supernova in 1054 AD. It is expanding at 1500 km/s, or 0.5 % light speed. In 24 years it would have expanded 1.13 x 10^12 km, or .12 light years. Hubbles image was taken with narrowband filters, mine with broadband, but one can still get an idea of the expansion over this time period.
